Apples and honey
A slice of apple dipped in honey — a wish for a sweet year; the meal begins with it.

Table
The Rosh Hashanah table speaks in symbols: everything sweet and round is a wish for a bright, whole year. The bread is dipped in honey instead of salt, and dessert is honey, apples and pomegranate.
Mountain and Sephardic Jews have their own festive dishes and an order of “simanim” with short blessings. What matters at this table is not abundance but the good wishes spoken over each food.
